A thyroid condition can make it pretty difficult to lose weight. Watch this video to see how to accomplish it.
Hi, I’m Dr. Mary Ann Block, Physician, Author and Medical Director of The Block Center in Dallas/Fort Worth.
Losing Weight With a Throid Condition
In this video, I’ll explain how to lose weight when you have a thyroid condition. When you have an underactive thyroid, your metabolism slows down, and it can be hard to lose weight. If you have difficulty with weight loss, talk to your doctor and make sure you’re taking the right medications for your thyroid condition.
T3 and Thyroid Problems
You can also ask your doctor if you need T3 besides the typical treatment of levothyroxine. T3 is the second hormone released by the thyroid, and research has found that taking T3 helps many people with hypothyroidism.
Diet and Thyroid Patients
Also look into diet changes. Eat plenty of low-fat protein and carbohydrates, such as vegetables. You can eat frequent small meals throughout the day instead of few large meals – this will help your metabolism, prevent fat storage, and will make you feel less hungry. You can also consider a low-carbohydrate or low-glycemic diet to limit the amount of starches and sugars you eat.
Supplements and Drugs With a Thyroid Condition
You also want to make sure that you’re not eating anything that might interfere with your thyroid medications. Calcium-fortified orange juice, calcium supplements and vitamins with iron can sabbotage your thyroid drugs, and it’s best to take these supplements several hours apart from your thyroid medication. And finally, excercise is very important. Raise your heart rate at least half an hour every day. Go for a walk, run, or ride a bike, for example.
